The Sports Betting Industry in India (part 2)

The Popularity of sports betting in Indian Cities

In 2020, Indians started to spend about one-third of their waking hours on their mobile phones, translating to about 1,800 hours per year. A survey showed that 75% of the 2000 participants wanted to have their own smartphones in their teens, and these teens have gone on to use their smartphones daily.

There is not much data on sports betting as well as its popularity in India. One statistic shows that 40 percent of Indians with computers visit online betting sites for horse betting, cricket betting, and lotto. Thanks to its popularity in the country, cricket is likely the most popular sport to bet on. It’s assumed that the total market for sports betting is worth around 3-4 Billion.

Find Trusted Betting Websites

Various foreign betting sites try to cater to the increase of sports fans interested in betting on cricket, hockey, and baseball in a safe and comfortable manner. When choosing a betting site, check to see whether their language section has languages common in India (Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi) since these sites usually cater to Indians.

Second, make sure that the betting site is off-shore. There are some states that allow brick and mortar gambling in some cases, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Although sports betting is still illegal in most of India, some new laws may arise in the next few years to legalize betting in general.

Potential of Legalization

It is said that the Indian federal government is preparing for legalizing sports betting and the Sports Ministry initiated a consultation process with stakeholders that might see a framework of regulation established. India’s Sports Minister also stated that this legislation wouldn’t be fast-tracked.

With billions of dollars spent on sports betting, this industry can benefit the Indian economy with the right legislation.
