Sports betting on cricket markets in India have been suspended following the decision by The Board of Control of Cricket in India — BCCI — to ban cricket matches in the South Asia country until the Coronavirus crisis is over.
Despite the ongoing pandemic, some matches in India have been taking place ‘behind closed doors’, which punters in legal jurisdictions were able to wager on.
However, President of The Board of Control of Cricket in India, Sourav Ganguly said that the social reality of Germany and India are different, there will be no cricket in India in the near future. There are too many ifs and buts involved. More importantly, he doesn’t believe in sport when there is a risk to human life.
Harbhajan ‘Bhajji’ Singh, former captain of IPL team Mumbai Indians and Punjab, also commented on the decision that when IPL teams travel, there’s a huge crowd at the airports, hotels, outside the stadium. He raised a question about how to stop them if the government are looking to maintain social distancing. Therefore, according to him, there should be no top-flight cricket until there is a vaccine for Covid-19.
Sunil Gavaskar former India captain added that as we all know, Australia has barred foreigners from entering the country until September 30. The tournament is going to start in mid-October so it is looking difficult at the moment. Next year the T20 WC is scheduled in India. If India and Australia are going to agree and the Covid-19 pandemic in India flattens out, they can swap. He thought that it can be held in India this October-November or next year in Australia.
The cricket betting calendar has been cleared until July 2020 as global events are already suspended due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. However, some betting markets are still open for cricket in Afghanistan.
